SONET
Synchronous Optical Network
SONET is a standard for connecting one fiber-optic system to another. Over the past decade, SONET has emerged as a significant
technology for building large-scale, high speed fiber-optic data network systems. The US Navy contracted with SDL design, build and
test a long-reach OC-48 SONET processing board that will fit in a PC/104-plus stackable computer. The final design is also capable
of processing SONET streams at OC-3 and OC-12 data rates. SDL has completed designing and will soon begin verifying a second, more
integrated board capable of processing OC-48 data for short-reach networks. Both designs are flexible enough to be adaptable over
multiple applications. The Navy is currently demonstrating the system capabilities to other branches of the military and to other
interested parties.
