SBIRS-Low

Space Based Infrared System

SDL was a member of the team led by SpectrumAstro to support the study phase of the SBIRS Low orbit constellation. SBIRS Low was a part of the next generation early warning system, providing missile warning, missile defense, battlespace characterization, and technical intelligence. SDL was responsible for sensor design work and calibration planning for the SBIRS Low constellation infrared sensors.

Under contract to Northrup Grumman, SDL had three major tasks:

  • Long Wave Scene and Target Generator with SSG, Inc. (pictured right)
  • LWIR DX Pathfinder Sensor to support a ground demonstration
  • General support of the SpectrumAstro team in the areas of focal plane arrays, calibration, cryogenics and contamination
