MagnetometerThe magnetometer permanently deployed at BLO by the Center of Atmospheric and Space Sciences (CASS) of Utah State University is a three-axis fluxgate magnetometer. The dynamic range of the magnetometer is + or - 64000 gamma with a resolution of 0.1 gamma. The sampling rate is 10 samples per second. The high resolution raw data (all there components) are transfered to the CASS on USU campus via internet. An automatic system then processes the raw data and produces the reduced data with a temporal resolution of 0.5 minutes. The reduced data is then posted to a website in graphical form. The archives of BLO magnetometer data include the high resolution raw data, reduced data, as well as graphics of reduced data since April of 1999. The BLO magnetometer data has been used to study the mid-latitude magnetic disturbances associated with substorms and storms and infer the current systems in the ionosphere and magnetosphere. The data has also been used to derive various local indices, which are also stored in the archive. |
