The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded the Utah State University Research Foundation (Space Dynamics Laboratory) of Logan a contract worth as much as $4.5 million over five years to provide technical support and perform two technology development studies for instruments slated to fly aboard its new generation of polar-orbiting weather satellites, NOAA said in a March 13 press release.
The work is related to the Cross-Track Infrared Sounder and the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder, which are slated to fly aboard the civil-military National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) as well as a precursor satellite. The instruments are designed to provide improved atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles when NPOESS satellites begin launching in 2013.
The contract has a one-year base period with four one-year options.
