Community Involvement

USU Research Foundation’s EPO Office develops programs that enhance public appreciation of the scientific and engineering work performed at USURF’s laboratories. Through SDL’s development and participation in EPO programs, families, educators and students engage with the current theory and practice of space and earth science. Our team includes private industry; university faculty, staff and students; and public school teachers. SDL is also a member of the Rocky Mountain NASA Space Grant Consortium.

Current EPO activities include:

  • Micro-Lada growth chamber experiments
  • Active participation in NASA’s Space Week
  • Involvement in NASA’s Education and Public Outreach program for the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) instrument for which SDL developed the science sensor.

Past efforts have included:

  • Science center and school exhibits of space instrumentation
  • A student computer data collection and weather observation program at Bear Lake observatory
  • Providing science projects for the local Newspaper in Education program
  • Providing education, calibration and maintenance on an observatory built at the Fort Hall, ID, Shoshone-Bannock High School
  • Promoting aeronautics to students with the U.S. Centennial Flight Commission as an outreach effort of the 2003 Wright Brothers Celebration

Native American Teacher Workshop

Rocky Mountain NASA Space Grant Consortium hosted its annual Native American Teacher Development Workshop in Vernal, Utah, in June, 2010. Teachers, high school administrators, USU and University of Idaho faculty attend this weeklong workshop. Its purpose is to facilitate a cross-cultural view of math, science and engineering to be incorporated into student curricula. Over the last two years, SDL has supported these workshops with presentations of the WISE program, handouts and literature.
