Offering hardware and software based solutions for efficient data handling

Data compression is an important aspect of sensor support, and SDL has made significant contributions to the field of image data compression, improving image quality at high compression ratios. We have developed and fielded algorithm and compression systems with compression ratios ranging from 2:1 to 250:1 for customers such as NASA, the U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy, and the Missile Defense Agency.

  • SDL’s hallmark compression hardware, the ARCH (Advanced Reconnaissance Compression Hardware) suite, has been aboard the F-18 platform as a subsystem of the SHARP (Shared Reconnaissance Pod) tactical imagery system for over a decade.  ARCH provides NITF‐compliant, near real‐time image compression solution for the transmission of tactical reconnaissance images from an aircraft to a command and control system.
  • We have developed a completely hardware‐based JPEG 2000 solution that outputs a JPEG 2000 byte stream for 8‐ and 12‐bit grayscale images.
  • SDL has also recently developed a hardware‐based motion video compression module. Our Motion Video Processor (MVP), conforms to MSIB and STANAG‐4609 standards and can be customized to fit various sensor platforms. It implements H.264 compression to allow high quality imagery (HDTV resolution) while utilizing a relatively low transfer rate requirement. The MVP synchronizes Key-Length-Value (KLV) metadata with the video stream to provide a standards-compliant data stream that allows the imagery to be readily shared.
