Bear Lake Observatory Facility

The Bear Lake Observatory (BLO), established by Utah State University in 1989, is run jointly by SDL and the Center for Atmospheric and Space Sciences (CASS). BLO measures the effects of lower atmospheric energy and momentum inputs (i.e. tides, gravity, planetary waves) into the upper atmosphere and investigates subauroral phenomena during enhanced magnetic activity. BLO’s location ensures a minimum of scattered light and radio spectrum interference. The BLO facility includes:

  • Seven experiment bays
  • A fully shielded radar room equipped with a magnetometer
  • Radar equipment
  • Several cameras
  • A weather station
